Georgia and South Carolina Coast Winter RVing: Jekyll, Skidaway, Hunting Island, Myrtle Beach and More

The Lowcountry and Golden Isles are mild rather than warm in winter, and that's the appeal: quiet beaches, open campsites, and live oaks instead of crowds. Here's what each major coastal park offers right now.

The short version

  • Jekyll Island Campground is the biggest option, with 216 full-hookup sites from $51 a night, a 14-night cap, and a separate daily island parking fee.
  • Skidaway Island State Park near Savannah is mid-renovation. A partial campground renovation started February 2, 2026 and is scheduled to run about a year, so fewer sites may be available.
  • Georgia State Parks open reservations 13 months ahead (14 for Georgia residents) and give campers 62+ 20% off campsites year-round.
  • On the South Carolina side, Myrtle Beach (138 full-hookup sites), Huntington Beach (66 full-hookup), Hunting Island and Edisto Beach all take reservations online with a two-night minimum posted at Hunting Island.
  • Check alerts before you go. Hunting Island's bridge to Little Hunting Island is closed for high tides, Myrtle Beach closes its trails November through January, and Huntington Beach has king-tide road closures.

The Georgia and South Carolina coast works best for winter RVers who want mild weather, not beach heat. The strongest bases are Jekyll Island Campground in the Golden Isles, Skidaway Island near Savannah, Hunting Island and Edisto Beach in the Lowcountry, and Myrtle Beach and Huntington Beach state parks on the Grand Strand. All take reservations, most have water and electric at every site, and several have full hookups.

Status matters more than usual this season. Skidaway is under a partial campground renovation, and several South Carolina parks have posted tide, erosion and trail notices. The details below come from each park's official page as of late October 2026.

Georgia: Jekyll Island and the Golden Isles

Jekyll Island Campground

Jekyll Island is a state park managed by the Jekyll Island Authority, and its campground is the largest public RV option on the Georgia coast. The campground lists 216 full-hookup RV sites with 30 or 50 amp power, plus 12 tent sites and six yurts.

  • Rates: back-in full hookup from $51 a night, pull-through from $54.
  • Booking: online through Campspot. There is no waitlist.
  • Limits: stays are capped at 14 nights. Cancelling at least seven days out costs $25, with a higher fee inside seven days.
  • Setting: maritime forest about a half-mile from Driftwood Beach. There are no waterfront sites.

Budget for the island parking fee. It's collected at the entrance gate, it's separate from your campsite fee, and it applies to every day you're on the island. Only the vehicle you drive needs a pass; a towed car doesn't need its own.

Crooked River and Fort McAllister

These two Georgia State Parks are smaller, quieter and close to I-95, which makes them good bookends for a Jekyll stay. Crooked River in St. Marys lists 63 campsites; Fort McAllister in Richmond Hill lists 67 on the Ogeechee River. Both are tagged as electric sites in the state's reservation system; water and sewer details aren't on the park pages, so check the site description when you book.

Georgia: Skidaway Island and Savannah

Skidaway Island State Park is the closest state park campground to historic Savannah. It lists 87 tent, trailer and RV sites with electric, some with sewer, plus camper cabins and yurts.

Renovation underway

The park says a partial campground renovation began February 2, 2026 and is scheduled to last one year. Some loops may be closed through early 2027, so expect tighter availability. The Avian Trail and the observation tower are also closed because of bridge damage.

Georgia State Parks rules apply here and at Crooked River and Fort McAllister:

  • Booking window: 13 months ahead, or 14 months for Georgia residents.
  • Typical campsite rates: the state lists $23 to $50 a night.
  • Senior discount: campers 62 and older get 20% off campsites year-round (one site per senior, registered to the senior).
  • ParkPass: required for every vehicle. Overnight guests pay one night's parking for the whole stay, or you can buy an annual pass.

South Carolina: Hunting Island and Edisto Beach

Hunting Island State Park

Hunting Island, east of Beaufort, has the most dramatic beach on this coast and a campground set behind the dunes. The park lists about 100 campsites with water and electric (50 amp), plus 25 rustic tent sites. Camping reservations require a two-night minimum.

The park's alerts change often. As of late October 2026, the bridge to Little Hunting Island and the Boneyard Beach area is temporarily closed because of high tides. The park page doesn't post a campground closure, but it also doesn't confirm live status. Call 843-838-2011 before you finalize a long stay.

Small heads-up for December: the nature center closes the afternoon of December 2, 2026, and the campground store closes December 3 and 4 for inventory.

Edisto Beach State Park

Edisto has 120 sites split between the oceanfront and a shaded maritime-forest campground, and 115 of them have 50 amp electric. Recent erosion has limited Beach Access 3 to foot traffic, and ADA golf cart access is temporarily unavailable. The page doesn't mention water or sewer hookups, so check the site listing.

South Carolina: the Grand Strand

Myrtle Beach State Park

Myrtle Beach State Park is the big one in South Carolina: 278 campsites, 138 of them full hookup. It puts you inside the city's oceanfront strip, so grocery runs and restaurants are easy.

One winter catch: the park says all trails close from November through January for maintenance and construction. Beach access isn't affected by that notice, but the forest walks are.

Huntington Beach State Park

South of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, Huntington Beach is the calmer Grand Strand pick. It lists 173 sites: 107 with water and electric and 66 with full hookups.

King tides close Oyster Shell Landing and North End Road at times; the park lists expected closures from October 24 to November 2, 2026. The Nature Center marsh boardwalk is closed for construction with no reopening date.

Both Myrtle Beach and Huntington Beach book through reserve.southcarolinaparks.com. On busy weekends and holidays, both may temporarily close to day visitors when they reach capacity, so arrive outside 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. if you're coming in that day.

Planning a coastal winter loop

Because Jekyll caps stays at 14 nights and most state parks have their own limits, plan to move every week or two. A route from south to north works well:

  1. Crooked River (GA). Start near the Florida line, a few miles off I-95.
  2. Jekyll Island (GA). Up to two weeks with full hookups. Pay the island parking fee each day.
  3. Fort McAllister or Skidaway (GA). Savannah base. Book Skidaway early given the renovation.
  4. Hunting Island or Edisto (SC). Call ahead for current conditions.
  5. Huntington Beach or Myrtle Beach (SC). Full hookups and city services at the north end of the loop.

How booking works in each system

You will deal with three different reservation systems on this trip, and they don't behave the same way.

  • Jekyll Island: Campspot, run by the Jekyll Island Authority. Changes and cancellations go through the campground office at 912-635-3021, and there's no waitlist if your dates are full.
  • Georgia State Parks (Skidaway, Crooked River, Fort McAllister): the state system, online or at 800-864-7275. Same-day campsite bookings are allowed until 4 p.m. on arrival day, which helps when you're improvising around weather.
  • South Carolina State Parks (Hunting Island, Edisto, Huntington Beach, Myrtle Beach): reserve.southcarolinaparks.com or the Reservation Center at 866-345-7275, weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Watch for park-specific minimums such as Hunting Island's two nights.

Because each system has its own cancellation rules, avoid stacking overlapping backup reservations. Book the route in order and keep a day of slack between parks.

Before you book: a short checklist

  • Confirm park status by phone for Hunting Island and Skidaway, the two parks with the most moving parts this season.
  • Book the Georgia parks early. With a 13-month window, prime winter dates go first.
  • Add the extra fees: Jekyll's daily parking, Georgia's ParkPass, and any reservation fees shown at checkout.
  • Plan for cold snaps. Coastal Georgia and South Carolina get occasional freezing nights. Our hose freeze guide covers what to do.
  • Read the cancellation terms for each system before you lock in a month of bookings. Our cancellation policy guide explains what to look for.

If you want warmer days, compare our Florida winter guide, which picks up just south of Crooked River.

Is Hunting Island State Park campground open for winter 2026-27?

The park's page doesn't post a campground closure as of late October 2026, and its reservation system lists campsites. It also doesn't confirm live status, and the Little Hunting Island bridge is closed for high tides. Call the park at 843-838-2011 before a long stay.

Does Jekyll Island Campground charge a parking fee on top of the site fee?

Yes. The campground says the entrance-gate parking fee is separate from the campsite fee and is due for each day on the island. A towed vehicle doesn't need its own pass.

How far ahead can I book Georgia State Parks campsites?

Up to 13 months ahead, or 14 months for Georgia residents. Campsites can be reserved until 4 p.m. on the arrival day if anything is left.

Do Georgia State Parks offer a senior camping discount?

Yes. Campers 62 and older get 20% off campsite rates year-round. The site must be registered to the senior, it's limited to one site per senior, and it doesn't apply to group camping.

Which South Carolina coastal park has the most full-hookup sites?

Myrtle Beach State Park lists 138 full-hookup sites out of 278. Huntington Beach lists 66 full-hookup sites out of 173.
