Holiday RV Road Trips: Light Displays, Warm-Weather Routes, and Booking Tips from Thanksgiving to New Year's

The weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's are a good time to be in an RV in the South: mild weather, big light displays, and campgrounds that are busy on a few key nights and quiet the rest. Here's what's confirmed for 2026 and how to plan around it.

The short version

  • St. Augustine's Nights of Lights runs November 21, 2026 to January 18, 2027. Viewing is free, and the city runs free park-and-ride shuttles on high-attendance days.
  • Other confirmed 2026 displays: Natchitoches, Louisiana (Nov 21 to Jan 6), Moody Gardens in Galveston (Nov 21 to Jan 2), Phoenix ZooLights (Nov 25 to Jan 15), and San Antonio's River Parade on Nov 27.
  • Book the holiday nights first. Some parks set multi-night minimums on holiday weekends; Gulf State Park requires three nights, all charged and non-refundable at booking.
  • Check closures: Valley of Fire closes December 1 to 14, and some New Mexico parks close on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
  • Don't drive into downtown light shows in a big rig. Park at the campground and use shuttles, trolleys or a towed car.

The best holiday RV road trips run south: Florida's First Coast, the Gulf Coast from Texas to Louisiana, and southern Arizona, where days stay mild and several of the country's best-known light displays run from just before Thanksgiving into January. For 2026, St. Augustine, Natchitoches, Galveston's Moody Gardens, Phoenix ZooLights and San Antonio's River Parade have all posted dates.

The other half of the plan is booking. Campgrounds fill for Thanksgiving weekend and the days around Christmas and New Year's, then go quiet in between. Every event date below comes from the organizer's or tourism office's page as of late October 2026; confirm again before you drive.

St. Augustine Nights of Lights

Downtown St. Augustine is wrapped in more than three million white lights. Light-Up! Night is November 21, with the ceremony at 4 p.m. and the lights on around 6:30 p.m. After that, they come on nightly at 5:30 p.m. through January 18, 2027.

The city's tourism office names the heaviest-traffic days: Light-Up! Night, the Christmas Parade on December 5, and the Regatta of Lights on December 12. On high-attendance days, free shuttles run from three free lots to the Visitor Information Center, and the downtown garage charges $40 after 1 p.m. The office recommends seeing the lights on foot or by tour rather than by car.

Natchitoches Christmas Festival of Lights

Natchitoches, in north-central Louisiana, marks its 100th Christmas Festival this season. The organizers list the season as November 21, 2026 through January 6, 2027, ending on Epiphany, with the Turn on the Holidays ceremony on November 21 and weekly Saturday events with live music and fireworks.

Moody Gardens, Galveston

Holiday in the Gardens runs nightly from November 21, 2026 to January 2, 2027, 6 to 10 p.m. It includes the Holiday Lights Trail and ICE LAND, and parking is free. Value Nights, Sunday through Thursday from November 30 to December 17, have the lowest prices. Pair it with our Texas Gulf Coast camping guide.

Phoenix ZooLights

ZooLights runs November 25, 2026 to January 15, 2027, 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. General tickets are $35, children 2 and under are free, and tickets are non-refundable. A sensory-friendly night is December 8, and a drive-through Cruise ZooLights night is January 17, both with separate tickets. The zoo says dates and hours can change without notice, so check its page the week you go.

San Antonio River Walk

The Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony is Friday, November 27, 2026, at 6 p.m., the day after Thanksgiving. Seating is ticketed through the River Walk's website.

Not yet posted

Albuquerque's River of Lights at the ABQ BioPark is a long-running holiday event, but when we checked, the city's page still showed 2025 dates. Check the BioPark's site for 2026 dates before you plan around it.

Three warm-weather holiday routes

The First Coast and Gulf loop (Florida to Louisiana)

Start in St. Augustine for Light-Up! Night on November 21 or any night after, then head west along I-10. Spend a few nights on the Alabama coast; see our Florida winter guide for campgrounds on the first leg. Finish inland in Natchitoches for one of the festival's Saturday nights.

The Texas holiday run (San Antonio to Galveston)

Be in San Antonio for the River Parade on November 27, then drive east to Galveston for Moody Gardens. This route is short, so you can settle into one campground for a week and day-trip from there.

The desert route (Phoenix and southern Arizona)

Base near Phoenix for ZooLights, then spend the quieter weeks in southern Arizona or along the Colorado River. Our Arizona winter guide covers campgrounds, and the Lake Mead area is a few hours north. Nights in the desert get cold, so plan for freezing temperatures even when days are warm.

How the 2026 calendar falls

The dates line up in a way that matters for booking. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. Christmas Day and New Year's Day both fall on a Friday, so each creates a three-day weekend. Expect campgrounds near popular events to fill on these nights:

  • Saturday, November 21: opening night in St. Augustine, Natchitoches and Moody Gardens.
  • Thanksgiving weekend, November 26 to 29: including San Antonio's River Parade on the Friday.
  • Saturdays December 5 and 12: St. Augustine's Christmas Parade and Regatta of Lights.
  • Christmas weekend, December 25 to 27, and New Year's weekend, December 31 to January 3.

The weeknights between those dates are the sweet spot: lights are on, crowds are thinner, and sites are easier to book. St. Augustine's lights also stay up through Monday, January 18, 2027, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, which gives you a post-New Year's option.

How to book campsites over the holidays

Holiday camping is busy on predictable nights. A few rules from the parks themselves:

  • Expect multi-night minimums. Gulf State Park in Alabama requires three nights on holiday and special-event weekends, all charged and non-refundable at booking. Ask any park you book whether it has a holiday minimum.
  • Know each system's booking window. Georgia State Parks open campsites 13 months ahead (14 for residents). New Mexico State Parks open six months ahead. If you're reading this in November, December and New Year's dates may already be tight.
  • Check holiday closures. New Mexico's Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Valley of Fire in Nevada closes completely December 1 to 14.
  • Watch cancellation rules. Non-refundable holiday nights mean a weather delay can cost you. Our cancellation policy guide explains what to look for.
  • Look at weekdays. Between the holidays, Sunday through Thursday nights are usually easier to get than weekends, and some events price those nights lower.

Our RV park reservations guide covers the booking basics in more detail.

Seeing the lights without driving the RV downtown

Most of these displays are in historic downtowns or busy attractions. Driving a 35-foot motorhome into them on a peak night is a bad idea.

  • Park at the campground and take a ride-share, a shuttle or a towed car into town.
  • Use event shuttles. St. Augustine runs free shuttles from designated lots on high-attendance days. Check whether the lots allow oversized vehicles before you try to park an RV there.
  • Book a trolley or tour. In St. Augustine, trolleys, a sightseeing train, golf carts and pedicabs all run during Nights of Lights.
  • Arrive early or late. Light-up ceremonies and parade nights are the busiest; a weeknight in mid-December is much calmer.

Rent an RV for the holidays

Fly in, pick up a rental near your first stop, or have it delivered to your campground.

Holiday-specific RV tips

  • Plan around closed stores and dump stations. Some services close or shorten hours on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. Fill propane and water, and dump tanks, the day before.
  • Decorate within the rules. Ask the campground about string lights, inflatables and extension cords across the site; quiet hours still apply.
  • Be ready for a cold snap. Even the Gulf Coast and Florida get occasional freezing nights. Our freeze protection guide covers hoses and tanks.
  • Travel off-peak. Roads around Thanksgiving weekend get crowded. If your schedule allows, move a day earlier or later than everyone else.

Your holiday trip checklist

  1. Pick your anchor event and confirm its 2026 dates on the official site.
  2. Book the campground for the event nights first, and note any holiday minimum and cancellation terms.
  3. Fill in the quieter nights between holidays, which are usually easier to find.
  4. Plan how you'll get downtown without the RV: shuttle, trolley, ride-share or towed car.
  5. Check closures for parks on your route, including Valley of Fire's December 1 to 14 shutdown.
  6. Stock up before the holiday itself: propane, water, groceries and a dump.
When are St. Augustine's Nights of Lights in 2026?

November 21, 2026 through January 18, 2027. Light-Up! Night is November 21, and the lights turn on nightly at 5:30 p.m. after that. Viewing is free; tours charge a fee.

Is there RV parking for St. Augustine's Nights of Lights?

The tourism office's FAQ doesn't cover RV parking. It lists three free shuttle lots on high-attendance days, but you should check whether they accept oversized vehicles. Most RVers park at their campground and take a ride-share or towed car.

Is Valley of Fire open over the holidays?

It's closed December 1 to 14 for annual maintenance, with no camping reservations in that window. It reopens after that, so the Christmas and New Year's weeks are still possible.

Do campgrounds require minimum stays over holidays?

Some do. Gulf State Park in Alabama requires three nights on holiday and special-event weekends, all charged and non-refundable at booking. Ask each park when you book.

Is Albuquerque's River of Lights running in 2026?

It's a long-running annual event, but when we checked in late October 2026, the city's page still showed 2025 dates. Check the ABQ BioPark's official site for this season's dates and tickets.
