A shaded site can outperform expensive gadgets. When possible, position the least-windowed side toward the strongest afternoon sun and use awnings before the walls heat up.

Start cooling early

Air conditioners work harder after the interior, cabinets and furniture have absorbed heat. Close shades and begin cooling before the afternoon peak.

Reduce competing electrical loads

On 30-amp service, move water heating and refrigeration to propane when appropriate and allowed. Avoid running high-draw appliances together.

Protect pets and people

Never assume campground power will remain on. Use temperature alerts when pets are inside, maintain ventilation options and have a backup plan for outages.
