Renting an RV

One-Way RV Rentals for Snowbirds: How They Work on RVezy vs. Cruise America and El Monte

Driving a rented RV south in the fall and flying home in spring sounds simple. In practice, one-way rentals work very differently depending on who owns the RV, and for many snowbirds a delivered rental at the destination is the smarter play.

The short version

  • Traditional rental fleets do one-way trips, but Cruise America says every one-way must be pre-approved and the drop-off fee varies by distance and route.
  • On peer-to-peer platforms like RVezy, most rentals are round trip. RVezy says some hosts may agree to one-way trips or delivery to another city if it's arranged in advance.
  • RVezy's delivery option is often the better fit: the host brings the RV to your campsite, sets it up, and picks it up at the end. Hosts set their own delivery fees and distance limits.
  • Relocation deals exist but don't suit a planned winter: El Monte says they usually post one to two weeks before pickup, and summer is the busiest season for them.
  • For a full season, compare three costs: two one-way legs, a long round trip from home, or flying in and renting near your campground.

A one-way RV rental for a snowbird season is possible, but only some companies offer one, and it's rarely the cheapest way to spend a winter in a rented RV. Traditional fleet companies such as Cruise America and El Monte RV will quote one-way trips between their locations, usually with a drop-off fee and route approval. On a peer-to-peer marketplace like RVezy, where you rent from a private owner, most rentals start and end in the same place. A few hosts may agree to a one-way trip if you arrange it in advance.

For many winter renters, the better option is to fly to the destination and rent there, often with the RV delivered and set up at your campground. Here's how each approach works, based on the companies' own pages as of October 2026.

Why one-way is harder than it sounds

A rental RV that ends its trip 1,500 miles from home is a problem for whoever owns it. Someone has to get it back, or it has to be rented out again from the new spot.

  • Fleet companies have locations in many cities, so they can absorb the RV at the other end. They price that in with a drop-off or one-way fee and only approve routes that fit their fleet.
  • Private owners usually have one RV and one driveway. If you leave their trailer in Florida, they have to drive down and get it, or wait for a renter heading back.

That's the whole story behind the policies below. It also explains why the snowbird pattern, south in fall and north in spring, means two one-way legs unless you keep the RV for the whole season.

How traditional rental companies handle one-way trips

Cruise America

Cruise America says every one-way rental has to be pre-approved, because it checks whether a vehicle can travel between the two locations. If a route doesn't work, it may offer a different route or vehicle class. The drop-off fee varies by distance and route, on top of the daily rate, mileage and optional kits. The company recommends calling first (1-800-671-8042) and booking early, and it notes that return locations keep business hours, so a late arrival can add fees.

El Monte RV

El Monte says one-way trips are often available but sometimes carry a surcharge, because drop-offs shift how many vehicles sit at each location. Its own tip for keeping costs down is to start and end in the same state. Its suggested one-way routes include Dallas to Florida along the Gulf Coast and Florida to New York.

Relocation specials

Both companies mention relocation deals, where they need an RV moved and discount the rental. El Monte says these usually appear no more than a week or two before pickup, with the best offers sometimes a day or two out, and that summer is when most show up. Factory relocations in spring and early summer can be booked further ahead.

That timing works against a snowbird. A relocation deal might get you south on short notice, but it won't hand you an RV for three months.

Ask about mileage up front

On fleet rentals, mileage is charged separately from the nightly rate and adds up fast on a long one-way leg. Ask for the mileage package price for your exact route before you compare quotes.

How one-way works on RVezy and other peer-to-peer platforms

RVezy is a marketplace: individual hosts list their own RVs, set their own prices, and accept or decline requests. Its destination pages say most rentals are round trip, so you return the RV where you picked it up, and that some hosts may be open to one-way trips or delivery to another city if it's arranged in advance.

In practice that means:

  1. Search near where you'll start. Filter for the RV type and dates you need.
  2. Message the host before you request. Use the listing's question button to ask whether they'd consider a one-way trip, to where, and what they'd charge to retrieve the RV.
  3. Get the arrangement in writing in the RVezy thread. Keep the drop-off location, date and any extra fee in the platform's messages, not a text.
  4. Expect most hosts to say no. It's a big ask of someone with one RV. Have a round-trip or delivery plan as a backup.

Remember the extra charges that apply to any RVezy trip. Guests pay a service fee at booking, with a minimum of $10 a night for trailers and $15 for motorhomes. Post-trip charges such as extra mileage or generator hours carry a 5% transaction fee. The host sets the security deposit, and RVezy places a temporary hold on your card three days before the trip.

The snowbird alternative: rent at the destination, delivered

For a winter base, many renters skip the long drive entirely. Fly to Phoenix, Tampa or Gulf Shores, and rent from a host near your campground. On RVezy, many hosts offer delivery, which works like this, according to its help center:

  • The host brings the RV to your site and sets it up: positioning and leveling, connecting utilities where available, and walking you through the systems.
  • The host picks it up at the end, and you should be there for the walkthrough.
  • Hosts set their own delivery fees and distance limits, usually a per-mile or per-kilometer rate with a minimum fee. RVezy says the fee is based on the one-way distance to your site.
  • Use the Delivery filter when you search, then enter your campground to see if it's in range and what the fee is.

If you plan to drive the RV somewhere after it's delivered, say so in your booking request; RVezy says your protection plan depends on it. Our guide to campsite delivery covers what to send the host, such as site number and gate instructions.

Check the campground's delivery rules

Some campgrounds restrict who can drop off an RV. At Davis Bayou in Gulf Islands National Seashore, for example, only companies with a National Park Service Commercial Use Authorization may deliver. Ask the campground before you book a delivered rental.

Questions to ask before you book

Whichever route you choose, these questions save surprises later.

For a fleet one-way

  • Is my route approved, and what is the drop-off fee?
  • What mileage package fits the distance, and what is the overage rate?
  • What are the return location's hours, and what if I arrive late?

For a peer-to-peer rental

  • Will you allow a one-way trip, and what will you charge to retrieve the RV?
  • Do you deliver to my campground, and what's the fee?
  • Are pets, generator use and long stays allowed?
  • What does the mileage allowance look like if I take short trips from my base?

For the campground

  • Do you allow third-party RV delivery and setup?
  • What's the maximum stay, and is there a monthly rate?
  • Are there length or age limits for RVs?

What to do next

  1. Decide if you want to drive or stay put. If you'll sit at one campground most of the winter, a delivered rental is usually simpler than any one-way option.
  2. Book the campground first. Winter sites in the Sun Belt fill early; see our Florida and Arizona guides.
  3. Get two or three quotes: one fleet one-way, one round-trip and one delivered rental.
  4. Ask about delivery rules at your campground before you commit.
Does RVezy offer one-way RV rentals?

Not as a standard option. RVezy's destination pages say most rentals are round trip, and some hosts may be open to one-way trips or delivery to another city if arranged in advance. Message the host before you book.

How much is a one-way fee with Cruise America?

Cruise America doesn't publish a single figure; it says the drop-off fee varies by distance and route, and every one-way must be pre-approved. Call the company for a quote on your route.

Can I get a cheap relocation RV for the winter?

Possibly for a short trip south, but not for a whole season. El Monte says relocation offers usually post a week or two before pickup, and summer has the most of them.

Who sets the RV delivery fee on RVezy?

The host. RVezy says hosts set their own delivery fees and maximum distance, usually as a per-mile or per-kilometer rate with a minimum fee, based on the one-way distance to your site.

Can I move a delivered RVezy rental?

Only if you arrange it. RVezy says your protection plan depends on whether you plan to move the RV after delivery, so state it in your booking request.
